In Action

Dear Friends,

We would like to share some photos and stories of medical, professional and religious groups that are making a difference! Take a look to see what others are already doing!

National Jewish Medical and Research Center - Denver, Colorado

"DO NOT wear perfumes, colognes, aftershave,

scented lotions, or scented hairspray."

Media Director, William Allstetter, confirmed that National Jewish has signs throughout the facility restricting the use of perfumes and fragrances. If a patient or visitor arrives wearing one of these items, they will be asked to leave. Notice appears on their website, under Your Guidelines as a Healthcare Consumer. Accessed on site and confirmed 11/3/05

Susanna S. Choi, M.D. - Parker, Colorado

"(No) Perfume. Due to the sensitivities of our patients and employees, we ask that you do not wear any scented lotions or perfumes to our office. If you choose to do so, it may be necessary to reschedule your appointment. Thank you."

This OBGYN office posts this sign at the front door. Photo taken April 2006.

Frontier Medical Institute - Terry Grossman, MD - Lakewood, Colorado

"Due to Patient Sensitivities Please No Perfume or Cologne. Thank You for Your Cooperation with This Matter."

Terry Grossman, MD is the founder and medical director of Frontier Medical Institute in Denver, Colorado. Dr. Grossman is joined with 3 other doctors in his practice. Their office has this sign posted on the front door: Photo taken January 2006.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. - Headquarters - Englewood, Colorado

According to Shay Carver from the RR headquarters in June 2006, their Appearance Standards have contained a no perfume or cologne policy for their the restaurant employees for several years. RR restaurants also prohibit smoking in their restaurants and bars. We commend RR for it's courage to be a leader and example. Thanks Red Robin! Confirmed with Shay in June 2006.

USA Cleaners - Parker, Colorado

According to Cho, the owner of USA cleaners said in June 2006, they use a "non toxic" cleaning process. [Related article: AQMD Aids Successful Transition to Non Toxic Dry Cleaning www.aqmd.gov/news1/2004/bs12_03_04.html ]

Aroma of Christ Ministry - Bellevue, Washington

Janine Ridings, founder of Aroma of Christ Ministry, has developed the Fragrance Free Zone at her church, Calvary Chapel Eastside in Bellevue, WA. Pastor Case has also posted a notice on the front page of their website. Janine's zone has become an example for many other churches! ACM hosted a display table at the 2005 N.W. Pastors' Conference to help educate pastors and leaders about the needs of the chemically sensitive, including suggestions for accommodation. Janine is the author of Comfort in the Storm. Listen to an Interview with Janine Here. Confirmed with Janine January 2006.

Everyone Can Make a Difference! Baby Shower Invitation

IMPORTANT NOTICE

PLEASE DO NOT wear ANY perfume, "scented" hair conditioner, or lotions of any kind, as I have a friend that gets EXTREMELY ill from scents, and won't be able to attend my party. If you do, she will have to leave, and won't be able to stay for the fun. I would really like for her to be able to attend. Thank you.

This is a notice that was place in a Baby Shower invitation by a 19 year old girl. The notice was given, so that a friend could attend the party. This person never asked her to do this; she did it on her own. People are always saying that they can't ask others not to wear perfume to a gathering. But why not? Why is it so difficult? Do we not want to offend someone? But why does it seem less offensive to tell a friend or family member they cannot come to the party, versus simply asking people not to wear it?
